I have worked at the same place for 5 and a half months, and have just been told im no longer needed without any explanation. I am the only one to go. Are they allowed to do this?

Hi Darren,
No, they should give you a valid reason. Go and see them and ask for a reason, even if you dont want to take any sort of legal action at least you can improve whatever it is you are doing wrong...

Im a bit late in replying to this thread Daz lad but I'm afraid you have no leg to stand on, if youve been there less than a year then Id say forget about it and just find another job. Sorry.

Im sure they have to by law to give you a reason - take the gits to a tribunal and screw them for every penny you can get. It's about time employers took some responsibility for their actions!!!!!!!!

People like you are ruining the economy, has it struck you that they might have got rid because they cant afford him and in order to safeguard everyones jobs.
Now your nice advise of screwing him will jeopardise others jobs by taking money out his business. I'm pleased not everyone in Newcastle is like you.

Whilst i wouldn't say screw him so many employers are lapse in there approach to the staff these days they only have themselves to blame, if the bloke can't be bothered to give this bloke 30 minutes to talk to and he genuinely hasn't done something wrong, then he should seek resolution through external agencies if he can.

I got paid off recently and got shafted for holidays. Just leaving it though as I may need references. Once I am in new job I may kick up a little stink then, but prob be over it by then. Being vengeful gets you nowhere. I'll just keep records myself next time, no matter how much I trust my boss or company. Any decent employer would respect that.

Probably best left. It would annoy me too though. Just you never know where the people there could move to. You could end up in a position where you need to work with them, or worse, for them again.

Regarding holidays...you normally accrue holidays for each full month you work.
So if you get 24 holidays per year and you leave at the 25th June then you will have done 5 full months as you havent worked all of June. Its standard employment contract. So in the case you would accrue 10 days holiday for working from Jan to 25th June.
Theres that many firms around struggling , some will try to get away with it. Just take them to the small claims court if they owe you.
