Anyone remember Coatsworth Road about 30 years ago? It used to be a really busling road with loads of little shops and friendly people--bit different from now.

Yep i went along there however i do know that 5 of the shops on Coatsy road at the time were just a front for a a local drug dealer who used them to launder his cash through my mate worked in the popular &^%$&%$ shop and said that he couldn't believe that it took three times as much on his day off as it did the whole of the rest of the week

I think the original poster was remembering a bygone age of local and regional retailers before the days when everybody had a bit of time to go and get decent groceries from the local guy who sold decent stuff because if he bought crap then people didn't shop there. And did not have a need to go and by the prepackaged pap that we get from the big 7 food retailers we have today.

I for one remember coatsworth road for a variety of things from the TV shop, wards the jewllers, the chicken shop of course as a kid the was always the mystery around the Stenhouse shop/bakery i see that that place has done well. You might ask why, i think it is because it has found a way of catering to its local community. Something obviously it's near neighbours haven't or did not know how to do.

One last thing please see my Newcastle Evening Chronicle thread. its about Brinkburn avenue which leads onto Coatsworth.

Hi,

Thats right, The Coatsy Road has definately passed an era and I really don't knw where it is heading. It would be fabulous if it could be regenerated into a good local shopping area with butchers, fruit and veg shops, ect. I have lived in Bensham for 67 years and have seen Bensham move away from it's great community spirit to one where nobody kows each other as they should.

There is a nice shop though at the end of coatsworth road where it meets whitehall road.

Don't really know the area that well but if people don't each others names then maybe what would help is if a cheers type bar opened up in the middle of the street, then,

you can go people go.......... where everyone knows you name.
